The 8th Annual NISTS Conference will occur on January 27–29, 2010. The following items are materials for this event.
Keynote Speakers
Jill Biden—Keynote Speaker (Invited)
Dr. Jill Biden, a respected community college educator and wife of Vice President Joe Biden, is an outspoken advocate for the support of community colleges. She is an adjunct professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College and has been an educator for nearly 30 years. Dr. Biden led the U. S. Delegation to the 2009 World Conference on Higher Education in Paris, sponsored by UNESCO . In her keynote address, she underscored her passion for teaching and the fact that community colleges are a critical part of America's university system. Dr. Biden is fueled by an affinity for working with students who bring a variety of life and work experiences to the classroom. Her dissertation, Student Retention at the Community College: Meeting the Students' Needs (2007) is evidence of that commitment.
Freeman A. Hrabowski, III—Keynote Speaker
Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, has served as President of The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) since May, 1992. Dr. Hrabowski is committed to ensuring assess for all students and has written extensively on the obstacles and opportunities for improving access to higher education for low-income, returning adult, and under-represented students. Under Dr. Hrabowski's leadership, UMBC has created a legacy of supporting transfer students, which make up 40% of the undergraduate population at UMBC. For example, the Arthur T. Johnson Transfer Scholarship Fund recognizes the academic achievements of outstanding Maryland community colleges transfer students. The campus also recognizes transfer student accomplishments through merit-based awards, presenting this honor to over 120 incoming transfer students last year. Ultimately, Dr. Hrabowski's emphasis on minority participation and performance has enhanced transfer success at UMBC.
Plenary Speakers
Linda Hagedorn
Dr. Linda Serra Hagedorn is a Professor and Director of the Research Institute for Studies in Higher Education (RISE) at Iowa State University. Dr. Hagedorn's research focuses on community college student success, retention, and transfer. She is especially interested in issues pertaining to underrepresented student groups, and equity. Prior to joining the faculty at Iowa State University, she directed the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida. She was also the Director of the Transfer and Retention of Urban Community College Students Project (TRUCCS); a longitudinal study of over 5,000 students enrolled in the Los Angeles Community College District. Although Dr. Hagedorn performs both quantitative and qualitative research, she is especially known for developing techniques to analyze enrollment data and other college files. She has created new rubrics and designs for longitudinal analyses of transcript data (transcript analysis). Her most recent published works include; Looking in the Rearview Mirror: Factors Affecting Transfer for Urban Community College Students; An investigation of critical mass: The role of Latino representation in the success of urban community college students and Hispanic Community College Students and the Transfer Game: Strikes, Misses, and Grand Experiences.
Glenn Cummings
Mr. Glenn Cummings is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Vocational & Adult Education in the US Department of Education and former Speaker of the House in the Maine House of Representatives. In his time in the legislature, Cummings led a bi-partisan effort to increase higher education appropriations. He also served as Majority Leader and as the House Chair on the Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs. Cummings recently left his position as Dean of Advancement at Southern Maine Community College where he also founded the Entrepreneurial Center to assume the federal appointment. Cummings is working on his Doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania and has previously earned a Masters of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University and a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University.
